irony-the use of words to convey a meaning that is the opposite of its literal meaning
metaphor-a figure of speech in which a term or phrase is applied to something to which it is not literally applicable in order to suggest a resemblance
stereotype-to make a stereotype of.
allusion-a passing or casual reference; an incidental mention of something, either directly or by implication
personification-the attribution of a personal nature or character to inanimate objects or abstract notions, esp. as a rhetorical figure.
OWN WORDS ?????
symbolism-the practice of representing things by symbols, or of investing things with a symbolic meaning or character.
One example of irony is how mama always calls papa useless, but she makes Liesel do all her delivery work and papa teaches Liesel.
That is irony because she is doing the opposite of what she says.
AND IF PAPA WAS USELESS, COULD HE TEACH LIESEL?
Another example of irony is
???
An example of personification is when it says,"The applied smell leaned toward the crowd, who were kept at a good distance."
It is personification because a smell cannot lean.
Another example of personification is when the book says the church aimed itself at the sky.
A church cannot actually aim.
GOOD EXAMPLES OF PERSONIFICATION; YOUR EXPLANATIONS ARE CLEARLY WRITTEN.
An example of symbolism is the red skies at the beginning of the book.
WHAT DO THE RED SKIES REPRESENT?
Another example of symbolism is the black and white skies, they symbolize the swastika.
A metaphor in the Book Thief is "on this occasion, Liesel followed Rudy's taunt almost as a reflex action."
Another metaphor is," The drizzle made them look like ghosts."
I AGREE WITH THE SECOND EXAMPLE, BUT IF 'AS' OR 'LIKE' IS USED IN A COMPARISON, IT IS A SIMILE.
Individual Assignment #2
1. Define internal conflict and external conflict.
2. Choose a major character.
3. List three examples of internal conflict and three examples of external conflict for that character.
4. Write two paragraphs - one for each kind of conflict - and elaborate on the conflicts. (What happens in the story to create the conflicts, where and when do the conflicts occur, do the conflicts get resolved, if so, how? etc.)
5. Choose a minor character.
6. Repeat steps #3 and #4 for the minor character.
7. Due date: Wednesday, May 5
8. Put assignment on your individual WIKI page. Label it Assignment #2.
Internal Conflict- A struggle or conflict within a character and only him or herself.
External Conflict- A struggle or conflict that one character has with another character. OR NATURE OR THE ENVIRONMENT
3 Internal Liesel
Liesel struggles with herself every night with her night mares.
Liesel cannot get herself to stop stealing and she is feeling guilty about it.
Liesel also feels guilty about steeling food such as potatoes and apples to get money for candy.
3 External Liesel
Liesel and Rudy always argue.
Mama gets mad when Liesel does not do her work correctly.
Liesel and her mom because she never rights/WRITES back to her.
One of Liesel's internal conflicts is that she cannot stop stealing books and she is starting to feel guilty about this habit. She takes the books because she wants to read more and she needs new books, but she is ashamed, especially after the third book that she gets. The book from the Nazi burning session is one where she feels very guilty. She tries to hide the book from Papa, but eventually the book gets so hot that she cannot handle the burning.
One external conflict that Liesel has is with her real mother. Liesel writes to her real mother, but she never gets letters back. She is starting to wonder about her mother because she dropped Liesel off at the Huberman's house and then left. Also, she thinks of her mother as a communisht, but she does not know what that is.
3 Internal Conflicts Rudy
Rudy wants to be Jesse Owens, but he does not know why that is bad.
Rudy likes Liesel, but she does not like him.
Rudy ???? WHAT IS A 3RD INTERNAL CONFLICT FOR RUDY?
3 External Conlicts Rudy
Rudy and the potato farmer when he steals from the farm.
Rudy and his father when the Jesse Owens incident happens.
Rudy and Liesel because he tries to kiss her.
Rudy's internal conflict with the Jesse Owens incident is important because during that time, black people were a minority that many people did not like. They lynched and killed them for nothing. Rudy wants to be him because he is a fast olympic track star. I think Rudy will later find out why he does not want to pretend to be black.
Rudy's external conflict with the potato farmer is not very on going, but Rudy and others steal from the farmer for money. With that money, they were able to buy candy.
THEY ALSO ARE ABLE TO EAT! THEY ARE SO HUNGRY BECAUSE FOOD IS SCARCE. THEY LIKE TO SEE IF THEY CAN GET AWAY WITH IT, TOO. IT'S THE ADRENALINE THAT TAKES OVER WHEN THEY DO SOMETHING THAT IS WRONG AND GET AWAY WITH IT THAT PUSHES THEM ON TO REPEAT THE THIEVERY. IT'S ALSO A WAY OF ENTERTAINMENT THAT ALLOWS THEM TO TAKE CONTROL OF SOMETHING IN THEIR LIVES IN A WORLD THAT IS SO OUT OF CONTROL.
Individual Assignment #3
1. Research how young people were indoctrinated into Nazism. What was the purpose of such organizations?
2. How did these organizations fit into Hitler's plan for a perfect world?
3. Write your answers in paragraph form.
4. Due date: Friday, May 7
5. Put assignment on your individual WIKI page. Label it Assignment #3.
Indoctrinate means to teach or to instruct in body of doctrine or principles. For example, in the book, Liesel is in the Hitler Youth Group. The Hitler Youth Group were young kids from about age eleven to age eighteen. The group was important because it was seen as a stepping stone to future membership of the Nazi party. Another group was the League of German girls. It was the only female youth group in Nazi Germany. The girls in the group were ages ten to fourteen. These groups fit into Hitler's plan because if the Nazis became the world rulers, they would have had younger people already in youth groups so when they grewup, they would be "good Nazis."
EXACTLY! THE CHILDREN WOULD KNOW NO OTHER WAY SO THIS WOULD BECOME A 'NORMAL' WAY OF LIFE. THERE WAS NOTHING TO QUESTION; ACCEPTANCE AND OBEDIENCE WAS ESSENTIAL TO HITLER'S PLAN.
Individual Assignment #4
1. Define the terms 'bandwagon' and 'scapegoat'. How do those two terms relate to your novel? Explain.
2. Due Date: Tuesday, May 11
3. Put assignment on your individual WIKI page. Label it Assignment #4.
bandwagon- a party, cause, movement, etc., that by its mass appeal or strength readily attracts many followers
scapegoat- a person or group made to bear the blame for others or to suffer in their place.
These two words relate to the Book Thief because the Nazi party would be a bandwagon because it is a party that attracted many people and had many followers. A scapegoat relates to the book because the Jews are the scapegoats for Germany's economic problems. They suffered because Hitler and the Nazis used the Jews for their scapegoat to their problems.
DID THE PEOPLE WHO JOINED IN ON THE BANDWAGON HAVE A CHOICE? WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU GO AGAINST THE MASSES OF PEOPLE WHO 'JUMP ON THE BANDWAGON'? THIS WAS ANOTHER ONE OF HITLER'S TACTICS.
